NonGovernmental Politics: Loose Bonds

In this interview, Lovink discusses several elements of the internet including its particular political and social qualities. He defines the community of computer scientists and engineers designing the internet as libertarian, their ideology disguised as technological issues on the website Slashdot. These people seek out capital without considering ramification; they may be building censorship tools for China while making tools that allow a user to surf anonymously. Lovink calls for an approach to the internet that does not rely on outdated postmodern philosophy. Finally, he discusses the internet as a network and argues that it is driven by sporadic yet intense noncommittal interaction that does not mimic former religious or political organizational structures. He questions whether this society must become fully integrate in order to integrate capital into the network.
